I tell patients at ORA that Hyderabad is one of the most demanding environments in India for skin. UV index of 8–11 from March to October. Humidity swinging from 15% in March to 95% in August. Hard water with TDS of 400–900 ppm. Pollution from HITEC City and ORR traffic. A routine designed for "Indian skin" in general isn't enough — it needs to be designed for Hyderabad specifically.
Hyderabad's Climate — What Your Skin Is Actually Fighting
| Season | Temperature | Humidity | UV Index | Main Skin Concern |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Summer (Mar–May) | 30–42°C | 15–40% | 9–11 (Extreme) | Dehydration, pigmentation, sunburn |
| Monsoon (Jun–Sep) | 24–32°C | 70–95% | 5–8 (High) | Acne, fungal infections, congestion |
| Post-monsoon (Oct–Nov) | 22–32°C | 40–70% | 7–9 (High) | Transition concerns, uneven texture |
| Winter (Dec–Feb) | 14–28°C | 30–55% | 5–7 (High) | Dryness, dull skin, flaking |
ORA's Recommended Skin Care Routine — By Season
Year-Round Morning Routine (Non-Negotiable)
- Gentle cleanser — Avoid soap-based or surfactant-heavy cleansers that strip barrier. Look for pH-balanced, SLS-free formulas. This removes sweat and PM routine residue without over-cleansing.
- Vitamin C serum (L-ascorbic acid 10–20%) — Apply before sunscreen. Vitamin C neutralises UV-induced free radicals, brightens PIH, and inhibits melanin production. In Hyderabad's UV intensity, this is as important as sunscreen. Store in a cool, dark place — it oxidises in heat.
- SPF 50+ PA++++ sunscreen — The PA++++ rating indicates UVA protection (the type that causes pigmentation and ageing). Broad-spectrum. Reapply every 3 hours if outdoors. Do not skip because "it's cloudy" — UV penetrates overcast sky at 70–80% intensity.
Year-Round Evening Routine
- Double cleanse (if wearing sunscreen or makeup) — Oil cleanser first to dissolve SPF, then gentle foaming cleanser. Sunscreen left on overnight contributes to congestion and milia.
- Active ingredient — Rotate niacinamide (pigmentation, pore minimising, anti-inflammatory — 5–10%) and retinol (collagen, cell turnover — start at 0.025% if new to retinol). Do not use both on the same night.
- Moisturiser — Hyderabad's hard water dries the skin barrier. A ceramide-based moisturiser (not a "whitening" cream, which rarely does what it claims) restores the lipid barrier that cleansing removes.
Monsoon Adjustments (June–September)
- Switch heavy moisturiser to lightweight gel formula — humidity provides ambient moisture, heavy creams add to congestion
- Use salicylic acid cleanser 2–3x per week to prevent fungal congestion
- Oil-free, mattifying sunscreen formulations work better in high humidity
- If breakouts increase: see Dr. Spandana P at ORA. Monsoon acne that is not treated correctly often leaves PIH that takes months to clear.
Summer Adjustments (March–May)
- Add a hydrating toner or essence to morning routine — Hyderabad in April is genuinely dehydrating
- Mineral sunscreen (zinc oxide/titanium dioxide) sits on skin surface and reflects UV — better in extreme heat than chemical sunscreens which can migrate with sweat
- Carry a mineral SPF stick for reapplication during the day
Winter Adjustments (December–February)
- Add a hyaluronic acid serum under moisturiser — Hyderabad winter dips to 14°C and 30% humidity
- Body lotion immediately after shower (within 3 minutes) to lock in moisture before barrier dries
- This is the best time to start retinol or chemical peel courses at ORA — UV intensity is lower, reducing PIH risk post-peel
Ingredients to Avoid in Hyderabad's Climate
| Ingredient/Product | Why to Avoid |
|---|---|
| Coconut oil as moisturiser | Comedogenic (pore-clogging) score 4/5 — worsens monsoon acne |
| "Fairness" creams with mercury or steroids | Illegal ingredients in many products; cause steroid-induced rosacea and mercury toxicity |
| Physical scrubs daily | Micro-tears damage skin barrier — especially in summer when skin is already stressed |
| Alcohol-based toners | Strip barrier in already-dehydrating summer heat |
| IPL at beauty salons | High PIH risk on Indian skin — not a laser, not calibrated for Fitzpatrick IV–VI |
When Your Skin Needs More Than a Routine
A good home routine maintains your skin. When there's an active concern — melasma, persistent acne, acne scars, hair loss — a home routine alone is insufficient. At ORA Kondapur, Dr. Spandana P will assess your skin at a free consultation and design a clinical protocol (peel, Q-Switch laser, GFC, etc.) that works alongside your home routine. Patients from Gachibowli, Madhapur, HITEC City, Manikonda, and Jubilee Hills visit us for this combination approach — rated 4.9★ on Google.
